For every eBay success story you read about on eBay’s’ website or on the Internet or in a book somewhere there are a thousand failures. The reality of pulling some obscure item out of your attic or garage and finding out that it is some rare collectible worth thousands does not happen very often. Having it happen more than once is almost freakish. You want to know, can I make money with an eBay home business. Yes, you can.
Do not go into this expecting to get rich overnight: you will be disappointed. Building any business takes time, money and effort. If you lack any of those ingredients, you will not make money. Before making the jump into entrepreneurship, ask yourself these questions. How much money do I have for shipping supplies, inventory, eBay fees, and unforeseen expenses? How much time do I have to devote to this business? Do I have the energy and drive to get this business off the ground or do I need to be asleep by 9pm every night?
Now, depending on how you answered these questions will let you know the best way to get started. You may only have enough time to start this part time, which is fine, everyone has to start somewhere. Don’t forget it is going to take time for you to build your business to the point where you wont need a day job, but in the mean time, you can put in part time efforts and start building your business from there. On the other hand, you will, more than likely need to invest a little bit of money to get started for shipping supplies, inventory and eBay fees. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, you may need to start off selling some of the items you have around the house that you don’t need or want anymore, in order to build a little money for the expenses listed above.
Now you know if you have the time and money to get started, so lets move on to the next question. What products are you going to put up for sale? This is where most people end up screwing up. They check out eBay and see that a lot of people are selling “widgets” so they jump in and sell “widgets” too. The problem is that so many people are selling them that the price is too low to make a profit, or your “widgets” don’t sell at all, because they bought their “widget” from another person. When you login to eBay, they have marketing tools available to help you decide on products to sell, make sure you use these tools. Without the right products your not going to succeed.
The information you glean from this research will be what you use to create your niche in the eBay marketplace. Are you nuts about vintage jeans? Are you a gemologist with stones to sell? Does the word tech no junkie fit you? Combine your interests with what is hot in smaller markets and you will do well. Don’t try to take on the mass marketers with ratings in the thousands and an inventory that rivals Wal-Mart, you can’t do it. Instead find your niche, your little corner of eBay and sell your heart out. It is far better to sell 10 beautiful Limoges boxes or powder jars for a premium, than it is to try to beat out all of the vendors selling Limoges style or Limoges type merchandise for a buck or two.
In the end, your customers will come to know and trust you. Your reputation will grow faster and so will your following. In a short amount of time, you may start to look to expand into the other Limoges items like plates. As you slowly expand and adapt your business to what is hot in Limoges or whatever category you choose, your profits and customer base will grow. Eventually you will be in a position that you can cut back on your employment and eventually make the leap into full time eBay selling.
